Patents are governed by the patent Act Cap 436 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 1990. 

 There are basically two kinds of patents in Nigeria viz patent of original term and patent of addition. An invention is patent-able if it is new, results from inventive activity and is capable of industrial application.

APPLICATION FOR LETTERS PATENT

The application is made to the Registrar of Patent on FORM 1A supported by COMPLETE PATENT SPECIFICATION description of relevant invention with appropriate plans and drawings, claims. An AUTHORIZATION OF AGENT FORM should be signed if the applicant wishes to be represented by a patent Agent.
